Church of the Cross

Located at 110 Calhoun St, Bluffton, SC 29910. The Church of the Cross has a rich history. The church was built with funds provided by the diocese and with the help of many people. The church was originally known as the Holy Communion. This name was changed in the mid-19th century when the church was renovated. The church became suggestive of an old English chapel. The chancel recess was decorated with trees. The Altar Guild was formed in 1844. There was also a woman’s Auxiliary. The parish school was administered by P. W. Williams. The burying minister was Rev. William Henry Snipes.

The church had a day school of 45 students. There were twenty members. This was a strong evangelical parish. The sacramental teaching was very good. The congregation was well organized. There was a very strong sacramental and devotional life. There was a strong sense of evangelism and the church had a strong evangelical zeal. There were also two auxiliary branches, the Woman’s Auxiliary and the Altar Guild. The church was also an active member of the Convention.

In 1947, the mission was renamed St. Peter’s by the Sea. This was due to the fact that the church is located at the Navy Yard. This renaming was carried out on April 3, 1947. The renaming was also accompanied by a new church building. This new church was dedicated on February 12, 1956.
