Palmetto Oaks Sculpture Garden

Located at 11 Palmetto Beach Ln, Bluffton, SC 29910. Near the May River in Bluffton, South Carolina, Palmetto Oaks Sculpture Garden is a lovely tourist attraction. This one-acre live oak garden features the sculptures of local artist Stephen Kishel. The sculptor has created a variety of metal pieces that have been called whimsical and magical. The garden’s centerpiece is the Sand Shark, which measures 24″ x 60″ and weighs about 200 pounds. The sculpture is a stainless steel piece that was inspired by the beach. Other prominent sculptures include Embracing Your Life, which is made of steel and weighs about 500 pounds. The garden is framed by a series of Curvilinear Paths, which compliment mature trees. The garden’s Oak Lawn is the largest open space in the garden.

The Sculpture Garden was designed for approximately sixty sculptures. The garden has a central pedestrian bridge that connects the two sides of the garden. The pedestrian bridge’s side rails are made of bronze with stainless steel mesh. Entry gates are also cast stone with bronze lanterns.

The Sculpture Garden’s entry plaza serves as a centerline that helps organize the design. The pavilions flanking the large plaza contain Henry Moore’s “Reclining Mother and Child” and Kenneth Snelson’s “Virlane Tower.” The plaza’s lower right wing contains the Dorothy P. Peace Garden Room for Children.

The Garden has a butterfly garden, which offers horticultural delights to visitors. The garden is surrounded by a large meadow, which is a prime location for viewing the sculptures. It also has a re-configured lagoon, which bisects the site. On the other side of the central pedestrian bridge, the lagoon is split into two separate basins. The sculptures in these basins are from a variety of artists. Among the most famous are Claes Oldenburg, Louise Bourgeois, and Deborah Butterfield.

The Gallery is a multi-million dollar venue that hosts rotating exhibits. Some of the art on display includes photography, fiber arts, pottery, clay constructions, and more.
