The house was designed by Charles B. Cluskey, who had been hired to design a house for shipping magnate Stephen Gardner. The house was originally built to look like large stone blocks. The exterior of the house is made of grey brick. The building was covered with plaster, and the facade was scored to resemble the appearance of the stone blocks.
The home is currently owned by the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization of gentlemen who are direct descendants of the officers of George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The original owner of the Harper Fowlkes House was Aaron Champion. He was a banker from Massachusetts who financed the construction of the home. He moved into the house several years after he built it. He buried a pile of his bank gold in the garden. He also continued to build the home. He died in 1931, and his estate sold the house to his daughter Maria McAlpin Strong Nichols. The estate later sold the house to the Citizens and Southern National Bank. The house was then purchased by Alida Harper in 1938.
Alida Harper’s father was a Society member. She lived in the house for 45 years, and she was a pioneer in the restoration movement.
