The Heyward House is one of only eight antebellum structures left standing in southern Beaufort County. During the early 1800s, this four-room house was built for a local plantation owner. The house is also a great example of the Carolina Farmhouse style, a popular architectural design from the Colonial period through the Civil War. The house has a simple timber frame that is reminiscent of West Indies-style architecture. It also has a reproduction summer kitchen that is outfitted with early American furniture. The building itself hasn’t been altered in many decades. Check this out here

The Heyward House is home to the only slave cabin that remains in Bluffton. This cabin was originally built by the Heyward family in the 1820s and served the family for more than a century. In 1998, the house was purchased by the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society, and it was converted into a museum. The house is a good candidate for the town’s only museum. During the day, guided tours of the house are available. These are the longest of the tours offered, but they take 45 minutes to an hour. They are not required for groups of more than 10 people.
