Professional Pet Odor Elimination for Lowcountry Homes
Carolina Carpet Cleaning has served Bluffton and the SC Lowcountry since 1993. We remove pet odor at the source. Our enzyme treatment breaks down the uric acid that brings the smell back in humid weather. Call (843) 575-6286 for a free estimate.
Why Pet Odors Come Back in the Lowcountry
Uric acid crystals in carpet and upholstery stay in a low-level damp state in our climate. Indoor humidity often stays above 50 percent even with the air conditioning running. Every humidity spike, from a door left open, a rainy week or the AC cycling off overnight, can wake the odor again. Salt air adds to the problem by holding moisture in the fibers longer, which gives odor-causing bacteria and mildew more time to grow.
Why masking products fail
Spray deodorizers, carpet powders and baking soda reach only the surface. They do not reach the crystals in the backing and pad, and the humidity brings the smell back within days.

Our Pet Odor Treatment Process
1. UV inspection to find every affected area
Dried urine is often invisible. UV light makes urine deposits glow, so we map the full affected area, which is usually larger than the visible stain, before we treat it.
2. Enzyme treatment at the source
We apply an enzyme solution designed to break down uric acid. It reaches the backing and, where needed, the pad. Enzymes need dwell time to work, so we do not rush this step.
3. Carbonated extraction
Once the enzymes have worked, our low-moisture carbonated process removes the broken-down material and the soil around it.
4. Neutralizing final pass
The final pass leaves the area pH-neutral. We do not add fragrance. The area should smell clean because the source is gone, not because it is covered.
Surfaces We Treat for Pet Odor
Carpet and carpet padding
Carpet is where pet odor most often sets in. We treat the fiber, the backing and, in severe cases, the padding. Padding replacement is the right answer when the pad is saturated, and we will say so at the estimate.
Upholstered furniture
Sofas, chairs and cushions are treated at low moisture. When urine has reached the foam, we apply the enzyme treatment through the fabric at low pressure.
Hardwood and tile subfloors
Urine can pass through carpet to the subfloor. If we detect odor under the carpet after cleaning, we treat the subfloor with a product matched to the material.
Area rugs and entry mats
Rugs and mats get the same protocol, adapted to the fiber. Natural-fiber rugs get the gentler moisture approach used in our rug cleaning service.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Odor Removal
Will cleaning remove the odor permanently or just mask it?
Our enzyme treatment breaks down the uric acid compounds that cause the odor instead of covering them with fragrance. Once the enzyme reaction is complete, the material behind the smell is no longer in its original form. Air fresheners and baking soda give only temporary relief.
What if the urine has soaked into the carpet pad?
We check the extent of contamination with UV light before we start. If urine has reached the pad, we treat the pad surface at enough pressure to reach it. When the pad is badly contaminated, from multiple pets, a long period or a large volume, replacing the pad is usually the most effective solution. We are direct about this at the estimate, because cleaning over saturated padding gives limited results.
When can my pet go back on a treated area?
Once the carpet is dry, which usually takes about an hour with ceiling fans running. Keep pets off until then so the enzymes can finish working undisturbed.
How many treatments does severe pet odor need?
Most cases are resolved in one appointment. Severe contamination, such as old, set-in urine from repeated accidents in the same spot, may need a second enzyme treatment after the first has dried. We set realistic expectations at the estimate, based on what the UV inspection shows.
