Why Lowcountry Conditions Affect Rugs

Fine sand works its way beneath the pile, where it acts as an abrasive with every step. Over time the fibers lose their loft and feel flat or crunchy underfoot.

Humidity adds a second problem. Many machine-made rugs use a latex backing that can break down in damp conditions, and moisture trapped under a rug on a hard floor can lead to mildew in the foundation.

Oriental Rug Cleaning

Hand-knotted Oriental, Persian and Turkish rugs are made of wool and silk, and their natural dyes can react to alkaline chemistry. Wool swells when wet, and standard truck-mount equipment can over-wet the foundation and distort the pile. These rugs need a different approach.

How We Clean Heirloom Rugs

  • Dye stability testing before any cleaning begins.
  • Low-moisture carbonated cleaning with no truck-mount equipment.
  • Extraction that follows the pile direction to avoid distortion.
  • Flat drying with airflow to protect the foundation.

Area Rug Cleaning

We use a dry carbonated method for area rugs because it works across the backings found in modern rugs. The carbonation lifts sand, pollen and oils from the fibers and extraction removes them without saturating the backing.

Because the rug is not soaked, it dries in about an hour under normal airflow, and it is not left with sticky soap residue that attracts new soil.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rug Cleaning

Why is my area rug leaving powder on the floor?

A fine powder under a rug often comes from a latex backing that has broken down, which humid conditions can speed up. Sand grit in the pile adds to the wear. We inspect the backing during the estimate and tell you what to expect.

Is it safe to clean an Oriental rug at home?

Home machines and cleaning products usually add too much water and alkaline chemistry for hand-knotted wool and silk. We recommend a professional assessment before any cleaning.

How often should rugs be cleaned?

Most rugs benefit from professional cleaning once or twice a year, and more often in homes with pets, children or heavy foot traffic.
