Upholstery Cleaning

Carolina Carpet Cleaning has served Bluffton and the SC Lowcountry since 1993. Our low-moisture process cleans upholstery without soaking the foam, so musty odors are treated at the source. Call (843) 575-6286 for a free estimate.

Why Upholstery Smells Musty in Lowcountry Homes

A musty smell that does not respond to airing out usually comes from the cushion foam. Foam is porous and rarely dries fully in coastal humidity, and the salt film that settles on surfaces draws more moisture into it. That damp core is where mildew odor starts.

Steam cleaning and soaking make this worse. Saturated foam takes days to dry in the Lowcountry, which can extend the cycle that produces odor. Consumer shampoos and wet cloths have the same problem.

Our Low-Moisture Upholstery Cleaning Process

Step 1: Fabric and Fill Assessment

We check the fabric type, the cushion construction and the fill material before choosing chemistry. We also test dye stability so colors do not bleed during cleaning.

Step 2: Low-Moisture Cleaning

A carbonated solution is applied at low pressure. The carbonation loosens soil, oils and biological material bonded to the fibers, and extraction lifts them out. Because the application is light, the foam below receives minimal added moisture.

Step 3: Odor Treatment

For pet and other biological odors, we apply an enzyme pre-treatment to the fabric and, where construction allows, to the foam beneath. Enzymes break down the compounds that cause the odor at the source instead of covering them with fragrance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Upholstery Cleaning

What causes the musty smell in my sofa?

In most Lowcountry homes the odor comes from mildew in the foam, which absorbs moisture from humid air and salt film. Cleaning the surface alone often does not reach it, so we treat the fabric and the fill with low moisture.

Will upholstery cleaning shrink or bleed the fabric?

The risk depends on the fabric and construction, so we assess both before we begin. Where needed, we test a hidden area first and tell you about any risks during the estimate.

How often should upholstery be cleaned?

Most households benefit from upholstery cleaning once a year. Homes with pets or children may benefit from cleaning every six months.
