The history of Old Town Bluffton is rich and diverse, shaped by a tapestry of events, influences, and cultural heritage. The town’s origins can be traced back to the early 19th century when it served as a bustling center for commerce and trade along the May River.

Bluffton was established in 1825 and quickly flourished as a prosperous riverside community. Its strategic location provided easy access to transportation and trade routes, making it a hub for farmers, merchants, and boatmen. The town became known for its thriving cotton industry, with plantations in the surrounding area producing the lucrative crop.

During the Civil War, Bluffton’s strategic position made it a target for Union forces.
